Type Repository Codens

Following the system and abbreviations of Arnett, et al. (1993), the following codens are used to indicate the collections that contain, or are thought to contain, type specimens of Buprestidae. The determination about the deposition of any particular type comes from the recent literature when statements have been made by respective authors. There are, however, a number of taxa listed in the world catalogue without specific indication of where the type(s) may be held and these are listed as "type?." The ever-evolving The Insect and Spider Collections of the World website (aka: the master list) can be found here (link no longer works)

This list is also available (here) as a downloadable RTF file (102 KB).

Type Repositories of Major Authors

The works of Horn & Kahle (1935-1937) and Sachtleben (1961) list the known repositories of the collections of most historical entomologists. Many prolific or historically significant coleopterists or buprestid specialists have their entire collections, or major portions thereof, deposited in a single institutional collection. This isn’t always the case as some authors might have received material from other collections for study and identification and thus returned types of new species to the correspondent institution.

Kerremans The first collection to BMNH, the second collection with African species (excluding Madagascar) to MRAC and the remainder to MNHN; the dates of these donations are not clear.

Olivier While portions of Olivier’s collection were sold to Chevrolat and are thus in the BMNH, other portions were sold to L. E. de Jousselin (Horn & Kahle 1935-1937), with some types probably in MNHN.

Reitter Palaearctic spp. MNHN, and remainder to HNHM.
