Limitations of the Key

Several genera of Onciderini are only known from one or few specimens (e.g., Cnemosioma, Monneoncideres, Priscatoides, Strioderes, Xylomimus). In some cases, genera are only known from one gender (e.g., Psyllotoxoides). Since twig girdlers exhibit strong sexual dimorphism, it is possible that the key does not encompass the full range of characters in unseen specimens and genders. In addition, new species of twig girdlers are continually being described. It is likely that newly described genera and species will not key out correctly.

Geographic distribution (countries) listed in this key are limited to data recorded in the literature and specimen labels. Many genera and species of twig girdlers are recorded from only one country or island, but are likely more widely distributed. Therefore, use the geographic distribution data with the knowledge that new records are found on a regular basis. Similarly, host plant family data are limited to data recorded in the literature and should be used with caution.
